The International RoboGames – Robots Of The World Descend On San Francisco For The 6th Amazing Year!

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 5, 2009

Get ready for RoboGames 2009! Officially declared by the Guinness Book to be the World’s largest open robot competition, RoboGames is the only science-slanted sporting event to make it on ESPN SportsCenter *and* in Scientific American!

“Watching the technology evolve and change at this event from year to year is fascinating. With the resurgence of the DIY movement – the makers, the experimenters, the garage builders – knowledge and building just for its own sake translates to an amazing array of developing skills and happy technological accidents,” said David Calkins, founder of RoboGames.

Robots from every continent are rocketing into San Francisco, the place where it all began, to compete in the spirit of technological discovery and sporting competition (with the tiniest dash of Gold Medal bloodlust)! This years attendees come from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Russia, South Korea, UK, and the United States. Can the UK’s 5-time gold medalist “Ziggy” retain it’s lead for an amazing 6th year? Will Brazil finally sweep the combat classes? Can Team USA regain the top spot in humanoid soccer, having lost a heartbreaking defeat to Austria?

This year’s event will host over 70 different competitions, including 18 different events just for walking humanoids. Large scale combat robots will fight to the death behind bulletproof glass, thrilling the crowd with crashing, smashing, flame-throwing, and miscellaneous wanton destruction. The combat robots, weighing as much as 340 pounds, are what draws most people to the event, but many stay for the AI based sumo robots, soccer bots, and kinetic art that fills out the venue.

But that’s not all – other events include kung-fu humanoids, hockey bots, fire fighting competitions, autonomous explorer bots (like the Mars Rovers!), art bots, bartending robots, and mechanical marvels that defy description! The newest event is “Mech Warfare.”

“What makes Robogames unique is the fact that absolutely anyone can compete,” says Simone Davalos, co-organizer and combat referee. “Where some competitions are restricted to certain age groups or universities, RoboGames welcomes all competitors. Anyone can compete, regardless of age, gender, education, or affiliation.” This years event includes contestants as young as 7 and as old as 72. About 35% of contestants are women/girls.

RoboGames was founded as the ROBOlympics in 2004. Founder David Calkins, who worked with all types of robot competitions, realized the need for cross-pollination between events, as too many robot builders over-specialized within their own field. By bringing builders from combat robotics (mechanical engineering), together with soccer robotics (computer programming), sumo robotics (sensors), androids (motion control), and art robots (aesthetics), robot builders could exchange ideas and learn more.

The second goal of RoboGames was to offer recognition to engineers from around the world in varying disciplines with consistent rule-sets and low-cost or free contestant fees. RoboGames never charges kids or primary/secondary schools an entry fee. By offering gold, silver, and bronze medals, and inviting the best robot builders from countries other than just the US, RoboGames gives everyone a chance to excel and compete on a level playing field.

Friday is the “Judd-Feldstein-Bruce Free Kids Day” (no admission charge for kids 17 and under). Kids from all over the Bay Area come and see the future! Robot Combat and Robot Soccer will begin in full force at 1pm each day.

In between competitions, attendees can explore the RoboGames midway, where one-of-a-kind vendors and eminent causes will display their wares and messages.

Special Press Interview Opportunity: The event is always open for press, but at 7pm on Friday, the venue closes to the general public, for the VIP and builder party, sponsored by Make: Magazine and Lagunitas Brewing Company. This is a great chance to interview contestants while they take a break from their preparations.

Brewer Petitions President Obama for ‘Beer Nutrition Czar’ Position

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 15, 2009

Publisher Bob Skilnik, president of Gambrinus Media, announced his candidacy today for the role of United States “Beer Nutrition Czar.” President Obama might soon be looking for another Czar who can help clarify the innumerable misconceptions about beer’s historic role as a beverage of moderation, hopes Skilnik (although he has little faith that the President won’t be able to resist saying “more taxes” and “beer” in the same sentence).

After personally fending off dozens of Internet critics, nutritionists, dieticians, and in one dramatic case, the incorrect information represented in the early version of “The South Beach Diet” that demonized all beers as beer belly makers (later retracted by the book’s author) with the 2003 and 2004 publications of his “Drink Beer, Get Thin Diet” and “The Low-Carb Bartender,” Skilnik thinks it’s high time that the President appoints him as national “Beer Nutrition Czar” and allow him to spread the word of beer’s nutritional benefits.

The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans cite several studies indicating that light-to-moderate alcohol consumption is linked to lower mortality from coronary heart disease, especially among men ages 45 or older and women ages 55 or older. But because of the bureaucratic suppression of such information, Skilnik has felt compelled to write “Does My BUTT Look BIG In This BEER? Nutritional Values Of 2,000 Worldwide Beers” (ISBN-13: 978-0982218204, $ 10), now available in book stores and Internet book sites. Tired of waiting for the federal alcohol regulatory agency, the Alcohol Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) to implement new changes in proposed alcohol nutrition labeling requirements that would tell consumers the nutritional benefits of beer, author and brewer Skilnik has instead compiled an impressive array of brews with their nutritional values. The paperback book can be used by dieters counting calories or carbohydrates or by moderate beer drinkers who simply want to know the nutritional values of what he or she is drinking. Following the book’s lead, Skilnik has shed 80 pounds with a smile on his face and a beer in his hand. Currently, this kind of information is only available on light or low-carbohydrate beers, another Washingtonian mistake.

“Look, I understand that one more Czar in Washington would only add to the notion that there could be more Czars in D.C. than you might have found at a turn-of-a-century Romanoff wedding. I’d therefore be willing instead to be a ‘Roving Beer Nutrition Czar,’ visiting bar after bar – something my wife would attest that I’m already quite adroit at – to get the word out on the positive attributes of America’s favorite adult beverage. I’m tired of reading websites of half-truths or picking up popular diet books that meekly admit that a little beer is good for your heart but then can’t tell you how many calories, carbohydrates or even Weight Watchers POINTS

Additionally, Mr. Rhodes understands the importance of acknowledging the bold steps of those remarkable young men and women who dare to take their dreams even further. Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Downtown Washington, DC Renovates Classic Hotel Bar & Happy Hour Menu

Washington, DC (PRWEB) December 20, 2009

The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, located along Connecticut Avenue in downtown Washington. DC, recently unveiled a modern refresh of its classic Town & Country Bar. The distinguished hotel bar in downtown Washington, DC, known as a social center among Washingtons elite, introduced the new renovated look and happy hour menu last month. The subtle additions to the classic bar include an expanded weekday happy hour menu, new leather furniture, and sleek hardwood floors.

We wanted to update the look of Town & Country Bar without losing its classic appeal, says Anthony Mardach, Director of Food & Beverage at the downtown Washington DC hotel, After being closed for a month we are excited to welcome back our regulars, in addition to serving new guests.

A Washington, DC classic, Town & Country Bar retains its world-class charm personified by legendary bartender Sambonn Lek who continues to mix signature cocktails. Along with the semi-private seating nooks, guests can now gather around a communal table, sink into black leather club chairs or belly up to the bar on swiveling leather stools. The carpeting has been replaced with polished mahogany and walnut floors, but the nightly live piano music amid the wood-paneled ambiance of an old school club remains unchanged.

This classic Washington, DC hotel bar embraces a taste of the new with its $ 5 Happy Hour Menu, designed to complement its renowned menu of 101 martinis, as well as the broad selection of wines by the glass, liquors and fresh-made mixers. Available weekdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and again from 10 p.m. to midnight, the new happy hour menu features savory small plates priced at $ 5 apiece. These include Grilled Filet Mignon Bites with horseradish cream sauce; House Made Chips with herb salt, local blue cheese and buttermilk; T&C French Fries with black truffle, parmesan and parsley; Grilled Flat Bread with Merguez sausage, aged provolone and arugula; Tempura Chicken Tenders with Town & Country buffalo sauce; Asian Boneless Ribs with hoisin sauce and vegetable slaw; and Tempura Vegetables with a sweet chili sauce. A full menu is also available.

In 2008 Esquire Magazine recognized Town & Country Bar as one of the Best Bars in America. The lounge remains a go-to place for District power brokers, as well as movers and shakers to deal and dine. The renovated hotel bar is situated in the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel at 1127 Connecticut Avenue and LaSalle Street, NW. It is open daily from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. For further information, call 202-347-3000 or visit http://www.renaissancemayflower.com.

Narconon Drug Rehab Christmas Wishes For Graduate

Norcross, GA (PRWEB) December 21, 2009

Thanks to Narconon drug rehab – for the first time in twenty-three years, Maggie, a self described “heroin baby”, is going to spend Christmas with her family and children, clean and sober

When Maggie was six weeks old, her mother, a heroin addict, dropped Maggie off at her Maggie’s grandparents house, stating she would return after she went shopping. Maggie’s mother never returned, leaving her grandparents to raise Maggie.

Maggie describes a great life with her grandparents -filled with love and Catholic School. She did well as a kid, but at 19 when her grandfather died, Maggie was not prepared to deal with the loss. She turned to cocaine for what she thought would be an avenue of temporary relief. Instead she became addicted and spent 25 years of her life focused on the chase of that next high.

Maggie reflects on her life; “When I was about 25 I started dating a bouncer at a bar. Our whole relationship was centered on getting high. One day when he was very high he robbed his friends house. A woman walked in and surprised him and he cut her throat. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison. I was pregnant so I married him in prison. I stayed married to him during the 12 years that he was in prison and I got pregnant again.

“Four years ago I started smoking crack cocaine and life really started to go downhill. My husband (now out of prison) left me because of my addiction and took our daughter with him. During the next 4 years, I had only one friend a crack smoker. I continued to do bartending, but started to get high at work. It had gotten to the point where I was high continuously.”

Fortunately, Maggie spent some of her time when she was high on the computer, looking for the right drug treatment program. Though she was not ready to go to treatment yet, she had her heart set on Narconon of Georgia and carried the number around with her for almost a year.

Maggie lost everything and for two days found herself living in her car, still not caring about anything but getting high.

“About 1 am I got a glimpse of myself in the mirror and started to cry about what I saw. I looked so bad that I didnt even know who that person in the mirror was. I still had the number in my pocket and I knew that I had to make the phone call to Narconon.

“I called and the person answering the phone assured me that she would do everything in her power to help me. She worked with my family so I could arrive to Narconon.

“That was the best phone call I ever made. Last Christmas I was at Narconon for addiction treatment and this Christmas I am decorating the tree with my kids.

“Last Christmas I called from Narconon and promised my kids that all the future Christmases would be good and this year I am keeping my promise.”
